AI development hours: what they are and how to use them

One of the most common questions we get about our Growth and Scale plans is also the most direct: “What are ‘AI development hours’ actually for?” Fair question. Here’s the honest answer.

The short version

AI development hours are a pool of build time, included with your hosting plan, that you can spend on small-to-medium projects on your site. Our DataStarters.com partners do the work — they use modern AI development tooling (Claude, Cursor, and others) to ship the same things a traditional developer would, faster.

What you can actually do with 5–10 hours

This is the practical question. Here’s a realistic sample of what fits inside the monthly hour budget:

Five hours doesn’t sound like much, but with AI-accelerated development the throughput is meaningfully higher than the same hour at a traditional agency. We’re seeing 2–4x the output for typical small-site work.

What it’s not good for

We’ll always tell you when something is outside the budget. AI hours aren’t the right fit for:

For those, we’ll scope a proper engagement instead.

How the process works

Simple:

  1. Email or live-chat us with what you want done.
  2. We reply with a rough hour estimate, usually within a day.
  3. You approve, we build, you review.
  4. Time logged against your monthly budget; we tell you when you’re at 50% and 80%.

Unused hours don’t roll over. They reset at the start of each month. We’re transparent about this because it keeps incentives clean — we’d rather you use the hours every month than hoard them.

Why we bundle it with hosting

Honestly? Because we kept watching hosting clients pay for hosting and separately go shopping for a freelancer every time they needed something built. The handoff is messy, the freelancer doesn’t know the hosting setup, and small projects get quoted at 10x what they should cost because it’s not worth a freelancer’s time to scope properly.

Bundling it means: one team, one relationship, one invoice. And it means the work gets done.
